Group Warns Army To Steer Off #EndPoliceBrutality Protesters

A Safety Rights Watch dog, Media Centre for Safety Reporting (MCSR)Nigeria, has warned the military particularly, Army Chief, Gen.Tukur Buratai to perish the thought of rolling out military tanks to attack peaceful young protesters.

The President of the Centre, Mr. John Thompson, who has been at forefront of Safety Reporting in Nigeria, said this in a statement in Abuja on Friday.
His words “we are not unaware of the evil temptation of dragging the military into a purely democratic and constitutional expression of young Nigerians against the unmitigated and brazen state sponsored violation of their rights.”

Thompson queried the ‘unwarranted and panicky’ press statement issued by the Army recently over the #EndSARS protests rocking the country. “I can’t remember when the Army became the guardian angel of democracy in Nigeria.
We don’t want to be reminded of their anti democratic roles in the dark days of this country, which remain unabated because we are living witnesses to internationally documented evidence of human rights violations by Nigeria military’.

Nigerian military is the greatest arch-foe of everything democracy stands for, which is what Young Nigerians want to bring to final end.

But, if they have now repented to ‘defend the country and her democracy at all cost’, they should pledge their unalloyed loyalty to the Constitution and support for these youths who have conducted themselves in strict compliance to all known democratic principles as the true custodians of democracy”.

He further stated that, the military is expected to have their hands full, with unending external aggression by Boko Haram, armed banditry ravaging the country, than “threatening fellow compatriots” or “embarking on unsolicited pseudo democratic lectures”.
