#EndPoliceBrutality: Safety Rights Group To Sue Police, FG Over Unending Brutality And Rights Violation Against Journalists

Media Centre for Safety Reporting (MCSR), a safety rights watchdog has resolved to drag the Nigeria Police force, Police Service Commission, Nigeria Police Council and indeed the Federal Government of Nigeria to ECOWAS Court of Justice over unending police brutality and violation of rights of Journalists in line of duty.

MCSR National President Mr. John Thompson said this in statement thus “the latest attack on Arise Television Journalists covering the #EndSARS protest few minutes after the IGP dissolved the SARS in response to global outcry of the toxic unit of force, has justified our call for a Commission of Inquiry and Reorientation of Police, instead of redeployment of disbanded SARS operatives”.

“However, we view the attack on Journalists performing their legitimate duty as transferred aggression which must be addressed once and for all”.

Recall that Media Centre for Safety Reporting (MCSR), had earlier issued two separate releases within a week, calling for retraining and reorientation of SARS operatives; as well as setting up a Commission of Inquiry into the activities of the proscribed police unit.

“We have therefore, activated our legal team to begin the process of human rights violation litigation against Federal Government of Nigeria and her security agencies over unmitigated assaults on Journalists”.

Thompson also enjoined Journalists that have suffered any form of human rights violation and assaults in the hands of Nigerian government security agencies from 1999- date, to gather their evidence to support our prosecution team.

He further stated ‘that online portal and our offices are declared open for compilation of documented evidence and witnesses to ease the legal processes’.
